Sony recently announced that 100 million (that’s a one followed by eight zeroes) PS2’s have been shipped worldwide, which they claim makes it the fatest selling game platform in history.
The breakdown by region goes something like this: more than 22 million shipped to Asia and the Pacific islands, more than 40 million to America, and more than 37 million to PAL regions (mainly Europe). If you’re good at math, you’ll notice those numbers only add up to 99 million; the extra one million comes from remainders (that pesky “more than”).
The original Playstation was the first console to ever deliver 100 million units, but that took over nine years. The PS2 is almost six years old, counting from its release in Japan in March of 2000. Sony expects PS2 sales to exceed those of the PS1.
To tie this news in with the XBox 360, 100 million is about five days’ earnings for Bill Gates, in dollars.
