Introduction
At a time when the CoD franchise is shooting for the stars, EA DICE has decided to launch their first World War I title since 1994, Battlefield 1. This is going to be the fourteenth Battlefield game, and it will launch worldwide on October 21, 2016 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
All the futuristic tech in first-person shooters these days might make you wonder how a World War I game can even be entertaining, but the debut Battlefield 1 trailer shows us a nice variety of weapons and vehicles. It’s also cool that they decided to go the realistic route, and all the weapons and vehicles you see in this game are actually real weapons that were used in WWI.
Gameplay
Expect new gameplay possibilities on land, sea and in the air as the game takes us all over the world to fight in historic battles. In the debut trailer we got to see warships battles, zeppelins, trench warfare and even mustard gas.
You may not realize this, but they used a ton of different weapons in WW1, it wasn’t as basic as you might think.
When EA introduced Battlefield 1 to the world they mentioned that tweaks were made to the controls in order to create a stronger feeling of immersion. We don’t expect any extreme changes made to the controls, but still, it’s probably enough to confuse fans of the series who are used to the typical controls.
The maps in Battlefield 1 are based on historic World War I locations, and four maps have already been confirmed. Amiens is a French city where the British and Germans fought. The St. Quentin Scar, is a Northern France location filled with trenches. Monte Grappa features cannon-equipped mountain forts, and battles between the Italian Army and Austra Hungarian Empire took place here. Empire’s Edge is the fourth map we know of, and it’s the Adriatic coast where you will likely fight with battleships.
There is a new game mode called Operations, which will consist of you waging war across multiple maps and rounds, in an attempt to win a series of battles. Other than that, all the classic Battlefield game modes are included.
Here are the confirmed game modes:
Conquest – this game mode is all about large-scale battles fighting for objectives, and up to 64 players can join these games.
Domination – there is an on-footer combat focus in Domination, where you will fight to secure objectives on smaller maps.
Operations – play in a series of maps and rounds in this new game mode.
After EA’s E3 press conference we got a chance to see Battlefield 1’s multiplayer, where they showed a 64-player Conquest mode played by celebrities like Snoop Dogg and Terry Crews, who were not good at this game by any means. But still, it was funny to see them all play!
Battlefield 1 has a strong emphasis on teamwork, and there are multiple character classes to give you a specific role on the team. There are a great deal of World War I weapons featured in this game, such as automatic and semi-automatic rifles, flamethrowers, bolt-action rifles, artillery, and mustard gas.
DICE has completely reworked the melee combat, introducing new weapons like trench clubs, sabres and even shovels. There are now heavy and light melee weapons.
There are also various vehicles that players will be able to take control of, such as armored trucks, biplane aircraft, zeppelin, battleships, horses, and both light and heavy tanks.
Environments are destructible as they are in previous Battlefield titles, and there will be weapon customization features. DICE is making all the current features we know to be more dynamic than ever, while introducing a ton of new stuff to make gameplay exciting.
Daniel Berlin, who is the game’s designer, said the campaign mode is bigger, with more open environments than all the previous Battlefield titles. There will be more options when it comes to how you want to approach combat, and even in terms of the path you choose to complete a level.
There are six distinct character classes in Battlefield 1’s multiplayer game modes, they are:
Assault Class – perfect class for those who prefer SMG’s and automatic rifles. This is the primary anti-vehicle class in Battlefield 1.
Medic Class – use this class to revive teammates, heal them, and repair vehicles. Medics primary weapon is a semi-automatic rifle.
Support Class – these guys use light-machine guns and they contribute to their team by providing teammates with ammunition when they need it.
Scout Class – snipers. Scouts also have a flare gun to use when they spot enemies.
Tanker Class – spawn into a tank. This class is new to the Battlefield series and is equipped with a hammer to repair vehicles. You get to spawn in a tank, how cool is that?!
Pilot Class – spawn into a plane.
