Bethesda wins Star Trek game franchise

Star Trek fans will have something to look forward to this year, beyond the 40th anniversary of the epic series. Bethesda, famous for their 2002 PC and Xbox game, Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, announced yesterday that they have won the rights to release a series of games based off of Star Trek, including two slated for release this year. These include Star Trek: Legacy for the Xbox 360 and PC, and Star Trek: Tactical Assault for the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP.

In Star Trek: Legacy (scheduled for release this September, 2006), you play as an Admiral, in charge of a task force of warships. Legacy promises to put your strategic and tactical skills to the test in real-time combat, and features authentic spaceships and full damage modeling. Gamers will be able to play through a storyline that encompasses the entire Star Trek saga, from the Original Series to the Enterprise eras.

Legacy promises to take advantage of next-generation consoles, with 3D battlefields and space environments filled with fully realized nebulas, wormholes, planets, and stars. Full multiplayer support is also being implemented, with the ability to choose between small-scale battles and larger battles, taking place in multiple star systems. Players will also be able to track their stats and player rankings. Star Trek: Legacy is being developed by Mad Doc software, the developers of the financially and critically successful Star Trek Armada II.

Star Trek: Tactical Assault, will showcase real-time spaceship combat, and takes place in the universe of the Original Series. Players will be able to play either Federation or Klingon campaigns by themselves, or engage in head-to-head combat over wireless multiplayer. Tactical Assault is being developed by Quicksilver Software, makers of the popular Star Trek: Starfleet Command.

The single player mode features branching missions and different outcomes, depending on what you decide is best for your campaign. The combat is in real-time, and the best way to win is to be efficient with a ship’s weapons and shields. You will also be able to take the fight to your friends via wireless multiplayer mode. Star Trek: Tactical Assault is set for release in September of this year.

According to Todd Vaughn, Vice President of Development for Bethesda:

“Being able to work with the entire universe of this beloved series is an incredibly exciting opportunity for us. We have some great ideas about where we want to go with this license and having the exclusive right to develop and publish Star Trek games across all platforms ensures that every Star Trek game will be a quality game worthy of its name.”
