Dark Souls 2 is a game that you either hate or love due to the fact that it is very difficult, and you will die over and over again until you learn how to handle yourself in battle. The first Dark Souls certainly has its fans and they have been anticipating this game for many years now, but if you didn’t like the first one then you probably won’t this one either.
Dark Souls II is a mystery without much of a story…
This is not the kind of game where you can instantly wipe out any enemy that comes your way and it is definitely not the kind of game that will tell you where to go with a map or radar of some sorts. Dark Souls II literally has you stranded in an unknown environment where you will never know what to expect around the corner.
Besides the brief tutorial in the beginning that teaches you your combat controls, Dark Souls 2 does not explain any further. This game is a complete mystery and this is also why many people don’t like it. There are no cutscene narrations or actual story to keep you entertained, but you do know that you’re a cursed human that will become “hollow” if you don’t obtain enough souls. Basically, you’re in limbo and the only way to survive is by collecting souls.
Combat Requires Srategy…
While some enemies will go down with the swing of your sword, others are smarter and will take you out simply by taking advantage of your missed hit. So at first it is difficult, after you fight a great deal of enemies you will catch on to their moves and understand how to kill them. Expect to die a lot of times in the process, and don’t get too frustrated!
Soul Farming
When you find yourself stuck in a certain area because the enemies are too tough, then it is probably time to level up your weapons and armor. After you collect enough souls to spend go to the blacksmith and get upgraded. If you find that the enemies are too weak and you want to farm some souls, you just clear out an area and burn an item there to respawn more difficult enemies. Each time you do this the enemies will get harder, so don’t overdo it and lose your ability to farm souls for the moment.
Now if you die you will lose all your souls, unless you can get back to the spot where you died to get them back. If you die before getting them back then you will lose them permanently, and since you die a lot in this game it can be frustrating.
Conclusion
If you can’t handle an extremely difficult game then don’t buy Dark Souls II. It is one of the few tough games out there that is truly fun to play for hours straight. It’s easy to get sucked into limbo as you progress through the game without a map or radar to guide you. With no direction or story to go off of, it feels like a mystery the whole way through. This is a nice change and you should definitely purchase it if you’re up for the challenge and love a good RPG.
