David Jones – creator of Grand Theft Auto – is putting together a brand new open-world game for the Xbox 360.
Crackdown puts players in control of a super, SWAT like, agent on a mission to clean up the city. There are a few aspects that will keep Crackdown from being a GTA clone. First off, the entire game world is open players from the second they start the game, so no unlocking of the various sections of the city. The game has a serious lack of missions. In fact, there are none. Players will be able to do what ever they want to rid the city of its various gangs. Agents will receive dossiers on the 21 Kingpins that rule the gangs, but from there on players can choose to: take the kingpins out, clean up the city section by section, or just kill every gang member they see – it's all up to them.
Another feature that will set Crackdown apart from other open-world games is its RPG elements. As the agent works his way through the city he will gain experience and his skills and abilities will be enhanced. There are five levels for each of the five attributes: Driving, Shooting, Agility, Strength, and Explosives. As the agent levels up his abilities will become truly spectacular. At full Strength players will be able to pick up and throw dumpsters, or kick whole cars down the street like tin cans. As Driving increases the various cars will transform into more bad ass versions of themselves. With full Agility, players can leap entire buildings in a single jump, and fall from large heights without taking damage. An upgradeable character should keep people playing even without a mission structure to follow.
Players will also be able to team up with friends in the game's Co-op Mode, played through a system link or Xbox Live.
