Eternity: The Last Unicorn (Xbox One) Review
Creative and whimsical world
Great if you enjoy PS2 style action RPGs
Feels like a budget game
Preset camera angles doesn’t merge well with level design
Eternity: The Last Unicorn looks, feels, and plays like a PS2 game. While new retro styled games are released all the time, this action RPG feels like it wants to be an AAA title but created with a budget price that is firmly designed as a primitive 3D game.
Mixing the visuals and magical world of something like a Baldur’s Gate but with the preset camera angles of the original God Of War games, this dozen hour single player RPG cuts corners at every turn. The lack of voice work makes the presentation feel empty. The low poly character models looks stiff and creepily robotic. The combat system is always chunky and unresponsive. The preset camera angles help tell a specific story but makes exploration suffer when poor level design is rampant – why are there so many traps when the game can’t judge distance!? Reading through pages and pages of tiny fonted text also makes absorbing the details of this world tedious.
Eternity: The Last Unicorn isn’t all bad and could be enjoyed by fans of older action RPGs or if you are new to the gaming scene. However, modern RPG elements and design techniques make this game feel like a new PS2 game on current gen systems – good for older players wanting to relive the Diablo-era of action RPGs with all the tedium that comes with it, bad for players who take for granted the modern luxuries of current gen titles.
Also available on PS4 and PC.
