Extreme G 3 is a good game that could have been great. The graphics are quite nice, the tracks are well-designed, and the gameplay is fast and engaging. If you like high-speed futuristic racing games, you could do a lot worse. Unfortunately, you could also do a lot better.
The game is very very fast, however; as expected the controls, although simple to learn, are nearly impossible to use. Steering and braking with the left hand is fine, but how in the world are you supposed to use the turbo, and the gas, and the fire, and the brake at the same time with your right hand. Despite that it is very playable, but at times you will find it too hard control the motion of the bike in a smooth manner. You end up all over the track, and I found that after playing for a short time, my hand starts hurting. You have to use both brakes… if you don’t you’ll be in the wall and your shields will deplete. This is certainly not a game where you can press the gas and never let go. The good news is that even though it is nearly impossible to perform all of these functions at the same time, the AI is structured to compensate because you can still win races without being perfect.
The graphics are nothing special, but the scenes are wonderful and the race-tracks are well designed from a futuristic point, so that makes up for it. The graphics are by no means bad, however games such as ICO look a lot better.
If you turn the music down and the sound-fx up, then you can hear the AI-voice coaching you through the action sequences at different stages of the race. I dont have surround sound so i can’t comment on that however. Overall the sound was good but the music could have been mixed better.
Extreme G 3 is much like the previous games with the N64. The sense of speed is incredible. If you?fre looking for a fun, fast, exciting, arcade style mayhem, then look no further and buy this game.
