Merging Worlds –
Coke or Pepsi? Toilet paper over or under? Salt or Pepper? Ketchup or mustard? Great debates like these have plagued mankind since the beginning of time. Knowing that consumers are always faced with life altering tough decision like these, Nabisco decided to make life a little easier by blending the best of two worlds – Oreo cookies with Chewy Chips Ahoy.
What seems like a Pirates Vs Ninjas style of fantasy debate, this is actually a real product and can now be found at your local grocer; I personally found these at my local Target. The concept is simple enough – put the Oreo crème filling inside a Chewy Chips Ahoy. Thanks to Nabisco, now you do not have to decide whether or not to buy Oreos or these chocolate chip cookies that everyone has been eating since forever. This is a merger of epic proportions. But do Chips Ahoys really need to be stuffed?
While this surely is headline worthy news, the end result isn’t exactly what you would expect it to be. Don’t get me wrong, these cookies are good and any dessert seeker can easily inhale an entire sleeve of these soft treats before you even realize it, but the overall flavor still tastes like a Chips Ahoy cookie. Yes, the crème is in there but you can’t really taste the Oreo crème difference. Even the texture of the cookie remains the same. It might be expected for a softer and sweeter end result but all-in-all still just tastes like a regular old Chewy. This is rather strange and disappointing because an Oreo without the crème doesn’t taste, or even act, like an Oreo at all.
Chips Ahoys are great cookies but I was expecting something more with this Oreo crème filled version. They are still just as addicting as ever but the chocolate chip taste totally overwhelms the Oreo crème flavor. There were also some kind of birthday cake crème filled Chips Ahoy on the shelf right next to this Oreo version; perhaps that flavor is a different story.
Like pretty much all junk food, this is stuff is super unhealthy. Each cookie is 10% of your recommended daily saturated fat intake, has about 6.5g of sugar and is about 75 calories a pop. You should definately pace yourself when handling these little guys but self control can be tricky when it comes to almost any cookie.
I give a lot of respect to Nabisco to giving the cookie fans of the world something that they never asked for and for taking a chance on merging two super foods. But maybe instead of stuffing a Chips Ahoy with Oreo crème, perhaps they should have done the opposite and stuffed an Oreo with a chocolate chip Chewy.
Not As Good As: you would think
