This headset definitely wins the gold for uniqueness, but how does the comfort and sound quality stack up?
Just from seeing a picture of this product, it is not hard to see the main selling point of this headset: it is a freakin’ helmet! The product’s packaging is constantly labeled with the Viking skull symbol, indicating the durability and ruggedness. The unit itself comes in a black box, listing the headset’s features on the back. Inside the box, the headset is covered with a nylon baggie for extra shipping support and to make carrying a bit easier.
Surprisingly, this headset is actually pretty comfortable. The inside of the helmet contains a series of straps to hold the helmet in place and to provide comfort – your head does not rest against the helmet itself. The ear cups will need some adjusting to find your specific comfort level, but once you find it, there will be little reason to readjust. Acting as a double edged sword, the ear cups are comfortable, but completely encase each ear. This means that there is potential that each ear can get a little hot in time. But this also allows for a higher degree of sound quality.
The headset does include a mic, but it is not detachable. This unit also uses the standard headset/mic inputs; no USB option here. Any audio device that uses these inputs is compatible with this headset; there is also an optional adapter to use with 360 and PS3. Positively, these adapters will allow the user to have a stereo option, but does require a bit of finagling to pull off. The 12-foot cable does make it a little more convenient though.
In all honesty, the product works pretty much exactly how you think it would: decent comfort level, basic options, and par sound quality. But this headset is really for the hardcore. If you are a teenager who takes gaming seriously, then this headset is definitely the way to be the envy of your friends. If not…well, you might look a little ridiculous if you wore this in a major lan party. But at the same time, that might be the overall goal for this headset.
For about $90, there are many other headsets on the market that offer more options. But options and sound quality are categories that take a backseat to this unit’s appearance.
