According to a leaked internal Gamestop memo, Gamestop will begin offering a six-month rental service starting November 19. For $60, the user can rent as many used games as you can play. However, the rule is that there is only one game out at a time. As a bonus, the user will be able to keep one game at the end of the subscription. It is unclear at this time if any and all games would qualify for this “keep” game or if it has to a game that retails for under $19.99, for example. It is also assumed that the users will be able to check out any used game at the store and will be available to check out at any Gamestop location, not just at one home store.
A Power-Up Rewards membership is required to participate in this rental service. Anyone can sign up for the free Rewards membership but there are also the $14.99 and $29.99 tiers as well.
This is an interesting move for Gamestop, taking aim at rental services like Gamefly. Will you be using this forthcoming service? Or do you think it will be going the way of Blockbuster? Let us know in the comments below.
