Giant Demonic Bunnies are Kind of Cute

This has probably been one of the worst cases ever for Sam and Max. Every time they think they are getting to the bottom of something the worst possible thing happens sending them back to square one.  Granted, having Max’s brain stolen and then the very next day having him turn into a giant demon that only wants to kill is probably something the duo may be almost used to at this point– it would still seem like a pretty bad week for the rest of us.  Interestingly enough it has made this entire season of the game amazingly fun to play through.

Through all of this tragedy the bipedal, pants-less dog with a gun and homicidal bunny thing have managed to keep their sense of humor.  This humor is the one thing that has made this entire series a joy to play.  Even in this last episode when the game has become increasingly aware of itself it is by far one of the funniest gaming experiences to date.

Most of that is helped with a voice cast that is spot on from the very moment the game is booted to after the credits roll.  The timing itself feels more like the cast was in one room together reading lines and joking back and forth instead of simply taking turns on the microphone.  This sense of timing makes it impossible to play through the game and not laugh repeatedly at the ever increasingly funny in-jokes and observations of the bizarre world the two live in.

The world itself feels more fleshed out than it ever has before, from the way that buildings have roof access that can be climbed up to, to the way that the city can finally be thoroughly explored. Even the way that, in this last chapter, the puzzles have gotten increasingly difficult the resolutions always seem to be something that would make perfect sense in a world where the devil feels that he needs to do PR management.

Thankfully the entire series has to be bought at one time, just like picking up a box set of DVDs from the store.  When the game is procured in this way, it may seem a little odd that there is a delay between episodes, but at this point in the series it almost feels like a forced break for the player so they don’t have to drive themselves insane with the cartoon logic that the duo always lives through.

The only negative aspect about this game is that we are going to have to wait a while for another installment.

Not As Good As: Being best friends with a talking dog and bunny thing
Also Try: The other two seasons
Wait For It: The hard copy collector’s edition that is probably coming out soon
