HyperX is the high-performance product division of Kingston Technology encompassing high-speed DDR4 and DDR3 memory, SSDs, USB Flash drives, headsets and mouse pads. HyperX is known for its quality, and this new addition to their Cloud Revolver headset line is no exception. The Revolver has already been certified for TeamSpeak, and will work with Discord, Skype, Ventrilo, Mumble and RaidCall. It has also been featured on many well-known gaming shows, and was prominently featured in PAX East 2016.
If Apple has taught us anything, it’s that presentation matters. It seems that HyperX too has learned this and it can be easily seen by their amazingly high quality packaging for the Revolver as seen below:
Featuring a box that’s absolutely worth keeping, not just as a place to store the headphones in due to the molded foam, but just for aesthetic purposes. Once the beautiful box is opened, it only gets better, since the Revolver is very striking with hits black and red shades, and its very metal (literally and figuratively) frame.
This steel frame connects the two massive 50mm drivers that give this headset its fantastic sound. They fit over even the biggest ears (mine) and are taught enough to not slide off even while moving around.
While being tight enough to not fall off, they somehow are still the most comfortable headphones I’ve ever worn, more than likely due to their own patented memory foam on the ear and head pads. I literally fell asleep twice with these on watching late night movies, and never noticed.
The cord connecting the jacks to the headset are braided in a very strong material, being both flexible enough to move around, yet strong enough to take some punishment. The only sad point to this cord is that the length of it is really made for console gamers to use in the controller ports, and the controller box attachment that comes with it is it can be a bit on the short side for those of us who play on the PC especially from the TV.
That said, it’s quite nice that the ability to turn on and off the removable mic from the control box is a nice feature, along with the volume wheel instead of volume buttons.
As for sound, I went out of my way to find audio files that stretched the limits of human hearing, and could not find one that I didn’t identify immediately thanks to the -40dbV sensitivity of the Revolver. I was thrown into a world of sounds I’ve never perceived before with any show or movie I watched, and had pinpoint accuracy in all my online games thanks to the audio depth given. The only real downside to that was being disappointed by games and shows that didn’t mix their audio well and it becomes very apparent after listening with high quality equipment.
While the stereo sound was quite nice, it was even more wonderful to find how great the electret condenser microphone was. It can go toe to toe with my studio condenser microphone and studio mixer, and it’s removable in case you don’t want to hear comments about your mother from a young man in an online FPS. Its noise cancellation was definitely up to snuff, as I had tested it with the air conditioner on full and no one on my Skype call even noticed.
The HyperX Cloud Revolver embodies the phrase “you get what you pay for” in that it does cost a reasonable amount, it is both fair and reasonable for its build quality. German made, it’s clear they have an eye for details and quality craftsmanship that should be admired. It might be hard to convince a person to not buy a cheap set of earbuds from the gas station due to the price, but if they ever start to use this HyperX headset, they will never look back.
