Konami has reported that their second quarter profits (April, May, June) are down 94% from last year. Their gaming, arcade, health club, slot machine, and other businesses have yielded $585 million of revenue, down 21% from this quarter in 2008.
While a large part of Konami’s struggle is attached to the ailing economy, the number is somewhat inflated by the strong sales for Metal Gear Solid 4 in 2008. Konami sold approximately 1.5 million titles during the quarter, largely second-tier sports titles and license games. This mark was beaten out singlehandedly last year by MGS4, which has sold almost 4 million units to date. While Konami remained in the black, this statistic is a testament to the importance big name titles have.
