Welcome to one of the first party games released on Xbox. Here at MyGamer.com we aim to look beyond the flashing neon and pounding music to tell you how well this game really stacks up against the competition.
Gameplay
Fuzion Frenzy is the epitome of how a party game should play. It’s got quick, responsive controls, a ton of games, and with 4-player mayhem there is tons of button mashing to go around. There is no game board in this party game, you’re swiftly whisked away to playing games as simply as possible through the tournament mode – and if that’s still too slow you can choose individual games in mini-game mode.
Graphics
The graphics in Fusion Frenzy are outstanding, especially for one of the first games released on Xbox. There are lots of bright neon lights and flashing colors, along with well-detailed characters running to and fro; it all makes for a visually stimulating and welcoming experience. Each of the gaming zones has its own final level, that’s created with a direct likeness to the level’s title; the Factory actually looks like a neon infested Factory. The high frame rates and smooth transitions between every aspect of the game will make you appreciate the graphics that much more too.
Sound
Into big beat electronica? Fusion Frenzy has a heart-pounding soundtrack with lots of high tempo music to keep tension levels high as you endeavor to be #1 at the end of each mini-game. If electronica isn’t your thing, then why not import your own music? This reviewer didn’t have much success with that approach – but then perhaps reggae and party games simply don’t mix. So, use the soundtracks at your own discretion, especially as music is a big part of the game’s ambience. There is also a booming announcer who announces each event, play, and character, in a classic over-the-top voice. Speaking of characters, each has their own unique voice, from Sampson’s deep growl to Zak’s whining high-pitched squeal.
Value
As with any classic party game, Fusion Frenzy is an absolute riot with 4 players. But even with a computer opponent or two the experience is nearly as amusing. The game probably won’t hold your interest for more than a few hours at a time, but it will always be a welcome distraction whenever you’re frustrated with other titles. And, as mentioned earlier, when you have friends over and you’re looking for some highly paced action, Fuzion Frenzy is one of the premier party games on the market for Xbox.
Overall
Full of bright lights and lots of action, this game will keep you hidden away from the rest of the world for quite a while. But, after the initial love wears off, you will find it harder and harder to get the passion back – unless you’re playing with 3 others. Even against one CPU controlled player you may find yourself getting more frustration then enjoyment out of the game. If you’re an avid fan of party games then I recommend purchasing Fusion Frenzy as there are so many different types of mini-games to keep yourself involved. If you are not a die-hard fan of the genre, you may want to save this game as a rental from your local video shop for whenever you have friends over.
