Effective immediately, Sony has cut the price of their PS2 hardware by $20. The system now sells for $129.99 instead of $149.99. Canada price point is now $139.99. A PS2 price drop was foreseen for quite sometime now, but enthusiasts might be upset that the $99 price has not yet been reached. [p]Sony probably only cut $20 off the previous price because they believe that the PS2 will live on after the PS3 is released. The PS1 lived on well after the PS2 was released. Actually, Sony ceased all production of the PS1 just one month ago, more than 10 years after it was first released. The PS1 sold over 100,000,000 units. [p] "While we continue to innovate and design groundbreaking new products, we remain dedicated to our long-term vision for the PlayStation 2 platform," said Kaz Hirai, the president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America. "Now even more consumers, as well as casual gamers, can experience what the PlayStation 2 platform has to offer — an unrivaled combination of the largest selection of software, a growing community for online gaming and one-of-a-kind accessories such as EyeToy(TM) — at a new value price."
