Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios President Phil Harrison announced an intriguing addition to the upcoming PS3 at this year?s GDC.
The PS3 will have region-free gaming. (Watching movies on the PS3 will still be region specific) This means that gamers can import games from around the world and play them without any modifications to the system. In the past many gamers installed mod chips in their Playstations to run imported games. This region-free coding may also reduce some of the piracy issues associated with mod chips.
With publishers being able to release a game globally with a single encoding, the wait for your favorite import titles may be much shorter.
