Japanese discount stores have been radically discounting the PSX, and now Sony themselves have lowered the price of the PS2-DVD-recorder hybrid. While no official announcement regarding the price drop has been made, Sony’s official Japanese shopping site has the 160 gigabyte DESR-5000 at a price of 44,800 yen ($409), while the higher-end 250 gigabyte DESR-7000 is now 59,800 yen ($545).
PSX sales have continued to fall in Japan even though the release of a reworked model in July, and repeated attempts to promote the machine have proven fruitless. The major price cut will likely boost sales, especially since it makes the PSX one of the lowest-priced DVD-HDD recorders on the Japanese market. The price cuts might be a sign that Sony will discontinue this product soon.
