Corporate giant Sony Electronics ? also known to make video game consoles ? has already released a 2.01 update to the PSP?s web browsing 2.0 firmware update. This new release arrives after internet rumors about hackers releasing a modified firmware that allows users to run their own (i.e. non-Sony) software. In addition to running games and movies, gamers ? if they were so inclined ? could use the modified firmware to run emulators for other consoles.
The 2.01 update offered by Sony has but one purpose: to stop the firmware from being installed. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on who you speak to), the firmware update targets PSPs sold in Japan; when or if it will be released in the US or Europe is unknown
