Test Drive Off-Road Wide Open

This is one of the few really average racing games released for any console. It had some bad factors but at the same time was pretty good is some areas. I would probably urge Xbox owners to purchase Project Gotham Racing if they are looking for a real good racing game, but this game certainly wouldn’t be a bad choice. There are several cars to choose from that range from the Chevy Blazer to the Dodge T-Rex. The main single player mode is probably the career mode. In this mode you get to choose any car you want and start racing. If you come finish in the top three of the race, then the next track is unlocked and the same rule applies until the end of this mode. Also, after every race completed you get a certain amount of money based on how well you did. This money can be used for purchasing an upgrade for your car or even a completely new car. Also, money can be used to repair your car after a damaging race. Each track requires a car with different stats. For instance, on a desert track, you may want to have a car with better handling rather than a car with the highest maximum speed. This enforces the need for trading cars basically after every single level. If you used the wrong car for a certain level then it may even be impossible to win and advance to the next track.

One good feature of this game is that it makes you want to explore off road to look for short cuts. The only rules of the game are that you have to go in-between gates in the track but it says nothing about how you get from track to track. There are several off-road shortcuts that will help you win and get much faster times. The name implies the fact that the game has a very wide track and makes it easy to maneuver. There are several games that make it feel as if your car is getting claustrophobic after you crash into the walls about thirty times in a row.

Buy it or not?

I would probably say that if you want an off-road racing game specifically then go ahead and purchase this game but if you want any type of racing game then go with Project Gotham Racing. This game gets a little hard down the road in career mode but I never found it completely impossible to beat if you had the right car and knew how to drive it.
