Yet Another Zombie Defense HD (Switch) Review
Only costs a few bucks
Multiplayer is the way to go
Only one empty environment
Low poly
Weak presentation values
Now On Switch
Yet Another Zombie Defense was originally born as an Xbox 360 Indie game many years ago and was eventually ported to other platforms including Xbox One. This Switch version is the same exact game as the Xbox One HD version – you can read this full review HERE.
Even though it is the exact same game, I had a couple minor issues with this Switch port over the Xbox One version. First, when playing in handheld mode, the “darkness” setting in the option menu needs to be turned all the way to 0% in order to see anything. However, the biggest difference comes from playing with dual JoyCons. Unfortunately, I found the Switch’s shorter and offset analog sticks to be cramped and more difficult to maneuver for this fast paced twin-stick shooter; a Pro controller helps with this issue. Also, there is no controller map screen, tutorial, or how-to-play in the options menu so the player is left to figure everything out with trial-and-error. Finally, the initial loading of this game takes forever, so much so that I thought my Switch froze during start up, and the Achievement system is there but doesn’t unlock anything for earning them.
It is also important to point out that this title supports up to 4 players in co-op but a Nintendo Online account is required to play online, just like Xbox Live. The Leaderboard system remains detailed like the Xbox One version and stands as the main incentive for replay value. While there are ultimately three gameplay modes to select, Endless and Deathmatch need to be unlocked by reaching level 7 in the Defense mode. This isn’t too difficult and will probably take a few attempts but just know that all the content isn’t available right from the start.
Yet Another Zombie Defense HD is an inexpensive, simple, low presentation values but entertaining digital download. While I prefer the Xbox One version over this Switch port, it is still is a decent time waster especially when played in multiplayer mode.
